Scavenger Hike Adventures
By Kat and John LaFevre/Girl Scout Council of the Southern Appalachian’s Council Partners
Hikers follow clues on 14 diverse park trails to find over 200 natural and historic treasures. Five easy, five moderate, and four extreme hikes offer suitable challenges for a wide range of hiking abilities. The Scavenger Hikes range from .5 mile to over 10 miles and we specifically included two trails that are wheelchair accessible. Your trail guide,Scavenger Hike Adventures, is kind of like having a pioneer, Cherokee Indian and mountain guide along with you. It is designed to enhance the national park experience: Fun, Exciting, Challenging, Humorous, and Educational all under an umbrella of “Leave no Trace.”
There is a point scale and formal “certificate” for achievement on each trail.
Requirements:Girls must complete 6 of 14 Scavenger Hike Adventures in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Girls must attain the highest level of achievement, “Frontier Explorer,” for the hike to count as a requirement mastered for the Scavenger Hike Adventure Patch. A signed and dated certificate of completion must be submitted to the Girl Scout leader for each of the 6 hikes. A minimum of four of the hikes must be “Moderate” or “Extreme” level as noted inThe Scavenger Hike Adventurestrail guide.
